Our season's first blueberries
Today we peeled back the netting and harvested our very first blueberries. We planted 3 new bushes this year. They won't produce until next year. Even with 6 bushes, I don't feel like we'll have enough, but we sure enjoy what we have. The boy's actually fought over them (we're cherishing that moment!); there weren't many berries -only 5 ounces.
We love it! It's harvest time! This gardening, homesteading, producing your own food experience, the garden, the eggs and meat, it's all such a good time; and the first blueberries today are definitely a highlight.

What perfect child size bushes ;) They will grow with the kids.
ReplyDeleteSo how have you kept them from the birds? We have several plants down here but I cannot keep the birds off them.
ReplyDeleteI have three new bushes this year also maybe I'll get almost a cup :o) hopefully they will grow and next year will be a good harvest...
ReplyDeleteJane, they are perfect for the boys. We would like to get a few more berries.
ReplyDeleteJDF, if you look closely at the pictures you'll see a white netting. You can get it at the fabric store by the yard. It's very cheap and totally effective.
Ginny, we're with you, hopefully next year will be a good harvest.
It looks like the boys had a good time harvesting those berries! You reminded me that I really have to get some netting on my raspberries and blackberries tomorrow. They are loaded with berries and will be ripening soon. I really don't want to share with the birds!
ReplyDeleteWish I have those berries too. I can't stop smiling about the boys fighting over it, must be very sweet and juicy. I am getting ready too with alpine strawberries trying to sow as many seeds as I could. It won't be enough for my boys too if I don't plant some more.
