Harvest Monday is a time for gardeners all over the world to share their harvests with one another. Link up with other gardeners at
Daphne's Dandelions and share your bounty.
We harvested the last of our winter carrots. There was a mole or a mouse or some kind of critter eating the tops of them, so we pulled them up. They weighed 3 lb and 12 ounces. Our annual yield is almost 12 pounds so far.

Q. James helping with the harvest. The kale plant is almost as tall as he is but not overwintering well. |

Shouldn't our soil be frozen solid??? |
|
Some kind of critter chewed this one up. |
WOW!!! That's a great harvest. So wishing I hadn't pulled out my carrots in December. Who would've thought the ground wouldn't be frozen in February?!!
ReplyDeleteNo Kidding! I was expecting to overwinter these carrots, but I don't think we're going to have a true winter this year.
DeleteYeah the ground ought to be frozen solids. Strange year. And beautiful harvest of carrots. Mine were rotting a bit in the fall (I swear my soil can rot anything) so I picked them all then.
ReplyDeleteStrange year is right. Our root veggies seem to be OK in the ground. I planted these carrots in 6 inches of pure composted yard clippings. They had tons of drainage, maybe that had something to do with it.
DeleteI vote for Vole. They love veggies and can really be problems this time of year. They will even tunnel under the snow to get them. I think Moles stick to bugs and such. Voles are hard to catch too since their eyesight is great. The carrots look wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI can picture you in the window, squinty eyed, looking for vole tracks....
DeleteI think you're right Jane. Our cat has caught several voles over the last couple of years. I should have thought of that.
DeleteI think you're right. Our cat Sydney catches them now and then. I should have thought of that.
DeleteSorry about those critters eating your carrots, but besides that, sheesh they look amazing. They are huge!
ReplyDeleteThanks Prairie Cat.
DeleteI just pulled the last of ours last week and they looked like pencils compared to yours! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, we planted them in pure compost. Maybe that had something to do with it.
Deletegreat looking carrots. And at this time of the year...WOW
ReplyDeleteWe're surprised too.
DeleteGreat looking carrots! Maybe next fall you could put some chicken wire around them before putting on the mulch?
ReplyDeleteNot a bad idea Mary. We're extending our garden this year, and I think we'll do that.
DeleteThe critters are able to somehow tell which is the largest and tastiest, got to give them credit. I lost the largest of my sweet potatoes to critters last year.
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly what happened. It picked the biggest carrot in the patch!
DeleteI would just lop off the top of that chewed carrot and enjoy it because it (and the others) look like real beauties. Your garden helper is darling and the kale stalk with little green plumes at the top was pretty funny!
ReplyDeleteHow was Belle's visit to Washington?
That's just what we did! We cut it off and ate the rest. I left the kale this winter just to see what would happen. Even in this incredible weather, it's not much.
DeleteBelle's visit to Washington was great. She got to re-connect with her mom, who turns 70 this year and I got to connect with the boys. It was good for the whole family, but we sure missed her!
Great looking carrots, I bet they are so sweet! I had the same problem with my beets, a vole was munching all the tops down to the ground so I pulled all of them.
ReplyDeleteThose nasty creatures. I hope our cat catches them before the spring garden starts coming in.
Deletewow, huge carrots and that kale is so tall. how long have you had it?
ReplyDeleteThe carrots were great. We planted our kale a year ago this March. It hasn't been producing for several months now. We're waiting to see if it will overwinter and produce again.
ReplyDeleteYou always harvest giant carrots. You have very good soil. Our carrot top part has been nibbled by possum these days.
ReplyDeleteThey look great! Did you cover them with straw to insulate them or just let them be?
ReplyDeleteNice looking carrots! That's a lot of good eating! :)
ReplyDeleteLynn
Thanks MK girl, we had a good year. We'll keep amending the soil and rotating crops so that it stays good!
ReplyDeleteVanessa, We covered them with straw. That's all. It's been an unseasonably warm winter so far.
MUB, Yea, the carrot soup was the best thing of all.
