Thursday's Kitchen Cupboard

Belle has been busy in the kitchen this week. She made grilled pizza with garden fresh tomatoes, basil and onions. She made manicotti ala romana with homegrown spinach, garlic and onions. Tonight she made chicken enchiladas with tomatillo sauce (if you've never grown tomatillos they're great! hearty, healthy, prolific and like a tomato -a basic staple in the kitchen!).

For Thursday's Kitchen Cupboard we'd like to share a humble picture of one dinner that is 95% home and 5% locally grown. The veggies, the meat and even the drinks are ours. The tomatoes, eggplant and onions are fresh from the garden. We raised the chicken in our back yard. It had a happy and healthy, grass-and-local-whole-grains-fed life of 10 weeks! The wine grapes were grown in a small vineyard 10 miles up the road, then picked by us and fermented here at home.

Isn't it funny. There was a time when homegrown local food was the norm and something from the grocery store was a treat. Now it seem the grocery store is the norm and a meal like this is the treat.

  1. It is really sad that we've been conditioned to look to the grocery store for our food rather than our own backyard. Congratulations on your 100% local dinner.

    1. Thanks. We don't have them often, but when we do, we're thankful.

  2. That's so true! When I was growing up you would never buy produce or meat from the grocery store.

Now, we are back to that same place!! Too bad more people didn't eat like this.

    Lovely dinner!

    1. It's hard work to grow produce and raise meat. Hopefully more and more people will slow down and take the time to make a change for the better.

  3. Love the very local dinner. Doesn't the food and meal seem so much more tasty and special when you know where everything came from and/or you had a hand in it's getting to the plate?
