Harvest Monday

Most of our weekly harvest.

This has been a good week, strange, but good! Because it's so late in the season, yet our garden is giving us it's greatest yields of tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. Stop by Daphne's Dandelions to see what gardeners around the world are harvesting on Harvest Monday.

The highlight of the harvest was definitely the beans C. James harvested from his garden (cold frame 2) and the carrots Q. James harvested from him (cold frame 1). What they say about growing gardens to get your kids to eat veggies is definitely true. On the morning after Calvin harvested "his" beans, he went to the fridge and packed several of the beans in his school lunch for later that day. And Q. James has been carrying his carrots all around the house sharing them with everyone he sees. He even took them over to the neighbor's Labor Day BBQ to share.

We're also very excited about the bit of strawberry popcorn we harvested this week. Wow are the boys excited about popping homegrown popcorn!
Strawberry popcorn. Thanks Robin for the seeds!

  1. Great harvest!

I must say, you have two of the cutest, most precious boys around. I'd like to just stick them both in my hip pocket and take them home with me!

    1. We're hoping our kids will have the same desire when they get older. We hope it's in their blood to stay!

  4. I love that the kids want to take their crops to school and to the neighbors. My middle daughter likes to carry around okra pods. She even asked to sleep with one a week or so ago. lol.

    1. That is too funny. It takes kids to tell stories like that.

  5. Wow what a harvest!! It's a good thing you have those two little helpers! I haven't harvested any of the popcorn yet. I guess that I should peek at it though since there are a lot of ears! Your peppers did wonderful compared to mine!

    1. What a harvest. What are you talking about? 75 pounds of tomatoes is impossible! Our popcorn is almost completely dry. I'm guessing it will dry in a couple weeks down stairs. Calvin is so excited. He said, "Yea, now we don't have to eat that icky store stuff!"

  7. A table covered with homegrown veggies and two grinning kiddos on the side. What more could a gardener want?

I've had the same experience with my kids wanting to eat what 'they've' grown.

  8. How come the little kid has the heavier basket? The expression on his face says: "Will you hurry up and take the photo, this is very heavy, you know." Cute kids.
    Beautiful table covered harvest.

  11. Home grown pop corn is the best. We didn't have room for it this year but had a great crop last year. We are going to have to figure out how to grow it again next summer.
