Hooray for the Year and Hmmm for the Next

We've been denied picture posts by Google. Apparently we've reached our maximum storage amount. Have you encountered this? I don't really know how to move forward with the blog. Do you all pay the nominal fee?

In other news. This has been our best gardening year! We're enjoying regular home grown meals complete with meat, starches and vegetables. We grew more than 1200 pounds of produce, raised 60 meat chickens, kept our fridge constantly stocked with eggs and had several rabbit meals too. We even  had several meals with green leaf salads and homemade breads (We're following Our Happy Acres as closely as we can to get that part done!). Leeks and carrots are overwintering in the garden. Unfortunately for our lettuce, all the cold frame glass was broken this summer. Still we have some lettuce! We're not rich so plexiglass is not an option, but for this year we have used leftover plastic and Christmas lights. The warm weather helps. We'll have at least two or three more salads before it gets too cold.

I'm sad to say our potato stores are sprouting early. To bad, we do so want to become independent with potatoes and garlic and spinach and... at least the garlic is a start. It's in the ground! And we have saved spinach seeds. Any recommendations on the potatoes? Purple Viking is an amazing variety, but hasn't upheld in storage. Yukon Gold is delicious, but we're not sure it will be viable in the spring for planting. Desiree will probably hold so that we can plant it next spring, but it's not an impressive variety.

  1. You're the second one today who reached their photo limit. I wonder what's going on, as I have more than four years of picture heavy posts, and (knock on wood) haven't been notified. Go set up a free account at photobucket.com Not quite as user friendly but, well, free.

Can't help on the potatoes, as my 100+ pounds have all been eaten long ago. I'm going to have to stop supplying all my kids with potatoes if I want to have them for myself all winter.

    2. Thanks for the helpful idea. Belle's been conserving out potatoes. I think we might even make it to January.

  2. The same thing happened to me last night. I set up a shutterfly account, they have free unlimited storage. Then you use the link for the picture to post on blogger. It's an extra step but it's free. I'll let you know if I find anything else out, let me know if you find something that is better or easier.

  3. The photo limit issue may be a bug: http://knownissues.blogspot.com/

It sounds like a satisfying year. I don't know if my potatoes are going to make it through the winter this year either. Most are stored in the coldest part of the basement, but I did have some reds begin to sprout already. I'm hoping it is just a fluke, but I will have to keep my eyes on the rest. It varies from year to year. Last year my potatoes made it through and I had seed.

  5. If you keep potatoes in the dark and dry cold storage like a root celar that keeps at 50 degress or less they should last all winter. It also helps to keep them in soil longer in fall to get all that sugar to turn to starch and that helps keep longer too.

    1. Jenny, thank you for your comment. It's revealing. Our storage space is dark and dry, but it hasn't been cool. That explains the early sprouting. Belle and I have determined to install an air conditioner. it's really what we need to do, not only for potatoes, but also for our wine. Thanks for tipping the scales for us. Now the work!

  6. I haven't had problems with the photo limit myself, but was recently talking to someone who had. Google's photo policy limits the number of large size photos you can upload. If you can go back and resize everything to no bigger than 800x800 pixels, you should be okay. You can read it from the horses mouth here - Google Support Free Storage Limits.

  7. Hi Jody, good to hear all is well at Sring acre farm, I've just recently pulled my garlic harvest and pleased to say its the one crop which has been very successful.
I too passed my photo limit and logged into Pisca photos and deleted old photos, so able to post at present.
    Good Luck.

    1. @Sue Garrett, I just commented on your blog about the photo editing program Irfanview. Jody will vouch that I'm not a spammer! I would definitely give it four out of four stars, I've been using it for probably 10 years, and it, as well as frequent updates, are free! www.irfanview.com/
