So that's what I did this weekend. I weeded the raspberries, the grass had really overtaken the rows. At times it felt like I was clearing sod, which by the way, was very convenient for patching grass holes in other parts of the yard!
After the weeding was finally done, I amended the soil with rabbit manure. It's great! It doesn't need to be composted before applying. It won't burn the plants. And hopefully, I've put a thick enough layer on that it will suppress the weeds!!

All the plants we'll put out after the last frost are now coming up in the soil blocks. The melons and squash are growing so fast I'll have to transplant them soon! Overall germination has gone well. If you look closely at the picture you can see some of the tomato varieties we'll be growing this year.

I couldn't imagine not weeding. I've tried mulch here, but it just encourages the slugs too much.
ReplyDeleteI do exaggerate. While we use plenty of suppressants, weeding is always a necessity. Voles are an issue here. They really love the sweet potatoes. I'm completely convinced they are perfectly intelligent creatures who choose the best of the best in the garden!
DeleteI'm not the best weeder...but I do try...once in a while. I bought a big gas powered weed whacker over the weekend...and I'm anti-power tools...but I'm in over my head! I will have to hand weed the berries...I don't want the whacker to injure them!
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way. Weeds are everywhere, even when you use suppressants the way we do. A good whack is sometimes just the right thing!
DeleteI hate weeding. I try to mulch as much as I can.
ReplyDeleteYes mam!
DeleteI have vole eating my sweet potatoes also so now I plant them in containers.
ReplyDeleteWe hate voles. They eat our sweet potatoes too. They always choose the biggest and best ones. This winter we've been feeding a stray cat, with the hope that it will stick around and catch voles for us.
