Today we planted 75 onions, a row of carrots and a row of shallots. We interspersed onions into the carrot row. Apparently carrot flies find carrots by smelling them. The onions confuse the flies and make the carrots hard to find. Go figure. This is our first time planting carrots. We hope it works.

Spring Garden Acre is a blog about our family's gardening adventures. We call our place Spring Garden Acre, because we live on Spring Road with about an acre. We're located in zone 6b of south central PA. We grow peaches, berries, vegetables and keep a few chickens for eggs and meat.
I try to do a lot of companion planting. It is very beneficial to the plants and helps with pest problems. A good resource for this is the book "Carrots Love Tomatoes" and "The Vegetable Gardeners Bible". They are basically the only two gardening books that I use or refer to.
ReplyDeleteRobin, thanks for posting. I've seen the recommendation for "Carrots Love Tomatoes" on your blog and wondered about it. Right now I'm using "Mini-Farming on a Quarter Acre". It's very good, but I need something more. I'll definitely check your suggestions out.

ReplyDeleteGood Luck with the carrots. We don't have problem with carrot fly. But we do have problem with snail and slugs munching on them when they are tiny seedlings. I like to interplant carrot and onion family too.

It feels a little too cold for snails or slugs yet. Hopefully they'll grow beyond the seedling stage before they appear. I had to look cucurbit up, and now I know. Thanks for the helpful information!
