Harvest Monday

This week for Daphne's Dandelions Harvest Monday we have asparagus.  We harvested 5 oz. It's our largest haul this spring!

Tasty tender shoots!

Last week was super busy, so we were not able to get much done.  But after dinner yesterday we managed to get a couple hours in, mixing dirt and replanting about 30 more tomatoes.  My goal for the week is to get our potatoes planted.  I'll share the details later. We also want to sell our tomato plants roadside. They're clogging up our basement. We need to make room for melon and squash seedlings.  The tomato plants should sell quickly. They're big and nice looking, and the first spring car show is on at the local fairgrounds this weekend, so there will be lots of traffic.

  7. Lucky you to have some nice asparagus! I'll have to wait until next year :( Today I took all of the tomatoes out of the basement. I just couldn't take it any longer. It looks like it's going to stay warm enough for them to be outside.

  9. What a tasty treat, fresh asparagus from the garden! I have to buy asparagus at the farmers market but it has been really fresh and sweet so I'm not suffering too much. :)

  10. Hi Malay-Kadazan girl, I hope your new place gives you all the room you need to plant everything your heart desires. Thanks for commenting.

Hi Daphe, with your green thumb (yes I saw that spinach), you'll have asparagus coming out your ears in no time.

Hi kitsapFG, we're always glad to hear from Washington, and hoping your spring garden is bright and delicious.

Hi villager, I love it too, and it was the first thing we saw coming up this year. In fact the first shoots grew up and then froze late last March.

Hi Gingerbreadshouse7, I hope you have them now and they produce to your hearts content.

Hi balblo, thanks for visiting our site and saying hello. I love low maintenance anything! But usually it means there will be little pay off. Asparagus is definitely the exception to the rule.

Hi Robin, we're feeling like you said. Last night we left our tomatoes out overnight. We're planting as soon as we have a couple free hours to do it. Last year the last frost was April 20th. Our 5 year average is April 25, and we have back-ups growing under lights just in case.

Hi Sherry, The great thing about asparagus, is that once it's in the ground it's good to go for years and years. I hope you find the perfect spot and a perfect day for it. See "The Soilman" for a great video on planting asparagus. http://www.soilman.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/planting_asparagus.mp4

Hi Michelle, Thanks for stopping by and commenting. We used to shop at a farmers market on every Tuesday in Escondido, California. How I miss the fresh avocados!

  11. I just started cutting asparagus here. I don't grow it myself...I have a secret asparagus spot along a creek bank near a rural rail. It's been producing enough for me to last the year and I've been cutting it for almost 10 years now. My 6yo daughter loves the stuff. Me too!

Still too wet and cold up here to plant anything. Sounds like you have quite a garden.

  12. Hi anonynoose, I'm jealous of your secret asparagus patch. You won't believe this, but I used to do the same thing as a kid. I grew up in Utah, and the valley fields were watered by irrigation ditches. Asparagus grew along many of them. I have no idea how it got there, whether it was planted or wild. I was just a kid, but I ate it up in the summer. Your daughter will remember that secret spot for her whole life! I'm sure of it.

  13. My husband would be very jealous. I must hide the link before he sees it! He's been after me to plant asparagus, but here the heat would not do it well!

  14. Hi Barbie, Jealous! Are you kidding? We're definitely not growing limes around here. To bad we can't make a trade. Thanks for posting.
