Harvest Monday

You have to look closely, but a volunteer Vivian romaine plant is there between the kale and arugula.

The highlight of our Harvest Monday with Daphne's Dandelions is a single volunteer romaine plant. At the end of May we harvested what we thought was the last of the spring romaine. This little guy was a complete surprise! He'll make a nice salad for lunch today.

Last Tuesday we harvested more kale and radishes. On Wednesday it was our first carrot. On Thursday it was even more radishes and a bit of arugula. On Friday we gathered raspberries (we've been gathering raspberries all week). Then on Saturday we harvested our first peaches and a single zucchini. Finally, on Sunday we harvested green leaf lettuce. Sometime during the week we harvested a single jalapeno pepper.

Of the six trees we have, this one always ripens first. The fruit is very fragile and small. We usually get just a few peaches. Maybe it's a Georgia peach tree, not meant for Pennsylvania. Who knows? We inherited it. The rest of the trees won't ripen for several weeks.

Bel made an 8 foot bean trellis earlier this week. The vines are climbing quickly.

romaine 12 oz
green leaf lettuce 1 lb
arugula 4 oz
kale 3 lb 12 oz
Radishes 1 lb 14 oz
Raspberries 1 lb 4 oz
blackberries 6 oz
Carrots 1 lb
Zucchini 1 lb
peaches 1 lb 6 oz
1 jalapeno pepper

  1. Fresh peaches - what a prize! I was going to pick some up at the farmer's market this past weekend but they were outrageous!

  4. It sounds like your summer crops are starting! I just can't believe that you are still harvesting kale and it hasn't bolted.

You'll be happy that Bel made that bean trellis 8' high. I never make mine tall enough.

  5. I wish I had inherited a peach tree like that! Ours were overgrown and not very fruitful. there's nothing like a garden fresh peach for sure!

  11. Hello all, I have dearly missed visiting all your blogs this week. I miss seeing your hard work, beautiful gardens and wonderful harvests. It's been an uniquely busy week at work. We've barely been able to keep up with our own.

Allison at Novice Life, The peaches are the prize of our garden, and they give us the largest harvest of all. We tend 6 trees, but get most of the fruit from 4.

Apple Pie Gal, juicy and all down the chin was exactly how these first peaches came.

Hanni, yes we love volunteer plants. This romaine was a complete surprise.

Robin, We were late this year on a lot of stuff, so the summer harvest is finally starting to come in. The kale won't stop. Their stems are about 8 inches high now. The beans are already reaching up to the 8 foot height of Bel's trellis!

villager, our peach trees were overgrown too. It's taken me 4 years to get them under control. Thankfully they were pruned properly when they were young, over time I was able to bring them back to their original shape and manageable size.

Carol, I'm sorry to hear that about your peach tree. Hopefully you can find a suitable replacement.

kitsapFG, thank you. Our harvest is starting to really come in now.

Malay-Kadazan girl, we're not going to make peach wine this year. Instead we're going to make peach brandy. Jane over at Hard Work Homestead posted a great recipe last week that we'll use.

Daphne, we adore the peaches too. Are you going to prune it to harvest without a ladder, or will you let it get big? We try to keep all our peaches within hand-picking reach. That means less peaches per tree, but also less work. With six trees we'll still have plenty of peaches.

Alicia@ eco friendly homemaking, thank for commenting on our harvest. We can't wait for the beans to come in. It won't be long now.
