It's Melon Time!

Such a great moment! Our first watermelon, 19 pounds.

Our first watermelon was so much fun. This time of year the bugs, the weeds, the harvest, the canning, the everything can get a little overwhelming.  It's a face like Q. James that makes it all such great fun.

Those big cracks in the melons are the result of too much rain at the very end of their life on the vine. Thankfully all that water didn't ruin the flavor, and the cracks didn't reach the edible part of the fruit. The one we cut was delicious! I'm so sorry, but I did not record the varieties we grew this year.

  1. Such a huge melon! We're keeping our fingers crossed for at least one even half that size. Alas, we our melon patch is not bunny-proof :(

  2. We have been getting cracks in our melons too. We have had three and a half inches in the last three days. So it isn't too surprising. Especially after a very dry July.

  6. Nikki, rabbits have found their way into our garden recently. They're eating all the leaves of our sweet potato crop right off the stem. Grrrr.

Malay-Kadazan girl yes you're right. They are huuuuge and sweet. We're very proud. Thank you.

Ginny, that sliced melon didn't last a half-an-hour in our house. We have nephews staying with us right now. They ate it up!

Robin, Thanks the boys were so excited. They're planted near the play toys outside, so they've been watching them grow, and asking and asking, "when can we eat them."
