Harvest Monday 10/31/11

This week we harvested 12 cauliflower heads for a total 5 pounds 6 oz. We still have about 75 brassica plants in the ground. Even though it snowed 4 inches two days ago and has fallen below freezing for two nights now, they're doing amazingly well. We're really hoping they'll have time to grow to full maturity.

Please stop by Daphne's Dandelions for Harvest Monday to see what other gardeners around the world are harvesting.

  8. Nice cauliflower. Mine have been done for a long time and in the freezer. That is one thing that grows well here in my short growing season however didn't get as big heads this year as usual.

  9. Robin, thanks, I can't wait to hear what's going on at the plots.

Malay-Kadazan girl,we have let ours go to long in the past. When the heads are small, it's tempting to do that.

Dorothy-Life With Boys, thanks. We got them from a nursery near by. I can't for the life of me remember the variety, White something... something White?

Ginny, cauliflower soup sounds delicious. Stay warm!

Norma Chang, thanks for stopping by! Sorry to hear about your cauliflower attempts, but you've got do what works.

GrafixMuse, thanks! I'm sorry you haven't had success. I've heard that cauliflower is a nutrient sapper. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Dave, it is a lot. We seem to have success with it and we enjoy eating it too.

Wilderness, Belle will blanch and freeze this stuff too. Glad it grows well for you too.

  10. Those are really gorgeous heads of cauliflower. They can be tricky to grow, but obviously you have it down to a science.

  11. KitsapFG, thanks. They seem to do alright in our soil. We fertilize with fish and kelp several times throughout their growing cycle. Beyond that with lots of water, they take care of themselves.

  13. Thanks Leigh, I wish I could say that for the other cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage plants that are slowly freezing to death in the garden. I planted them too late and there's not enough time in the day to get hoop houses up. Darn it!
