Racking, Racking, Racking Wine

We finished out the night racking wine.  We racked red grape, white grape and on the end is strawberry.

We hope this will be the last racking of our strawberry wine. I think this was the third time since June. The rule of thumb for us is too rack, rack, rack and keep racking until the lees have absolutely disappeared from the bottom of the carboy.

Lees at the bottom of the strawberry wine.

Here's that miraculous siphoning tool I mentioned to Jane in the comments on her last post about wine. It creates its own suction, never back spills, and is even forgiving when you raise the intake too high and lose suction. You can find it at High Gravity Brew and other wine brewing stores online for around $10. I highly recommend it.

  1. That really looks good! even if I don't know the first thing about doing it :o)
I'd love to know how, but with all the medication we take maybe it's best we don't :o)

  2. I am telling Santa right now that I must have that siphon tool. And 20 gallons of wine? I sure wish you were my neighbor :)

  3. I loved my auto-siphon until I broke it trying to get the tubing off. I wonder if they make stainless steel ones? I am pretty rough on the plastic racking canes too.

The strawberry is clearing up nicely. What kind of grape wines are in the other carboys?

  4. Malay-Kadazan girl, it is really interesting. I could read and read about it, and doing it is so much fun.

Ginny, They look better than they taste right now. It takes a long time for the pay off. But it's worth it.

Jane, enjoy the siphon. We're probably not that far from you. When we travel that direction, we'll bring a bottle (or two) along for fun.

  5. GrafixMuse, I just missed your comment by a second. If they make steel siphons, I don't know about them. The red is Landot Noir and the white is a Jonnes Seves hybrid.

  7. Hi Dr. Momi, we think its pretty too. We're really looking forward to opening our first bottle. The books recommend two years aging. That would be Summer 2013. I'm not sure we can wait that long.

  8. Wow! I'm impressed with the wine making although I don't know how anyone could wait 2 years... that's just torture!

  9. It does feel like a long time to wait. We could drink it sooner, it would taste fine. Two years is what we've been told is best. We'll see how long we can hold out!
