Bloggers in Realtime and Harvest Monday

Harvest Monday continues to be a great way for gardeners to stay in touch, share ideas and enjoy each others harvests. Stop by Daphne's Dandelions see what other gardeners throughout the world are harvesting this time of year. Here's what we gathered,

broccoli 3 pounds 9 oz
Romaine lettuce 11 lb 4 oz
Red Sails lettuce 3 lb 8 oz
Strawberries 5 lb 8 oz
Viroflay Spinach 3 lb 4 oz
Flashy Trout Back Lettuce 10 oz
Escarole 1 lb 2 oz
Rainbow Chard 11 oz

Total 29 lb 8 oz

Today was a great day! We visited Robin and "the Italian" at the Gardener of Eden. And we had a great time together! Great food, great hospitality, great conversation and, oh yea, a great garden. You should see Robin's garden. We're not just talking vegetables folks! There were flowers at every turn, herbs in every pot, an amazing herb garden just outside the kitchen. Her tomatoes, garlic, peas, broccoli, cauliflower and potatoes look wonderful. By the looks of our tomato plants, you'd never know we were in her same zone.  After seeing all the work Robin has done to put together her community garden plot, we don't know how she did it! and in only 3 months! We had a wonderful time. Thanks so much Robin for taking such great care of us.

We wish we'd taken more pictures. There was just so much going on. Here's a few snapshots we managed to get.

Me and Layna my niece enjoying homemade salsa varieties from the garden. We had a taste of Robin's delicious strawberry infused vodka. Yumm!

Robin had the best dessert surprise for the boys. They made homemade strawberry ice cream!

  3. Isn't she just something else? She's my bestest cyber buddy, but I'd love to be able to visit with her in person. Her gardens are really beautiful.

  4. What fun that you got to visit again with Robin. We stopped there last year to see her community plots but now of course she's had to do it all again and probably bigger and better. She is a wonder woman in that garden.

    1. You're completely right. It was an incredible garden, especially in light of the time Robin had to put it in.

    1. We'd love to visit everyone too. We're thinking we could do a road trip across the country and take our stops to see gardeners along the way!

  10. It's great being able to interact with other gardeners in person. :) What are you doing with all the excess produce? Do you give it away or food banks?

    1. Great question! The short answer is we use it. Seriously, we eat most of it! Yet, we also share a great deal of it with friends. We also sell a little roadside and to "The Green Room" (http://www.thegreenroom.us/), a local restaurant that prepares locally grown food, and we freeze it. Belle is the master freezer. We've given no broccoli, spinach, greens or strawberries away because she's frozen them all for winter eating. I can't praise her enough! Nothing's wasted because of her!

  11. What a wonderful treat to visit a blog garden in real life.. and that strawberry ice cream looks like a pretty awesome treat too! And 11 lbs of romaine! What do you do with that much lettuce?

    1. Robin and "The Italian" were a treat. Is 11 pounds of romaine really a lot? It's only 8 or 9 heads. We shared 2 with Robin, a local restaurant wants 10 heads, we gave away at least 4 heads to friends at home, and we're eating, eating, eating the rest up! We're amazed at how great a substitute lettuce is for bread/tortillas/etc. It goes with everything! There's still more to eat in the garden and the fridge. Crunch, crunch! Yum, yum.
