Thursday's Kitchen Cupboard

Robin at The Gardener of Eden hosts a great canning, recipe-sharing and whatever-else-gardeners-are-doing-with-their-harvests event every Thursday. Take a moment to visit and enjoy what you find.

It's a busy time of year in the garden. We harvested all our cabbage recently. Belle made cabbage salad with our Golden Acre harvest, Korean kimchi with 10 lbs of Chinese cabbage and she's pickling 8 lbs of red Tete Noir and Red Acre cabbage today! Yum, yum, yum!

We substituted Chinese cabbage for Napa

The recipe for the kimchi is too long and complicated to write down. You can find it in The Kimchi Chronicles by Marja Vongerichten.

I came home from lunch to see Belle packing jars with salted cabbage for pickling. I didn't know canning could be sexy, until I started gardening with her.

The pickled cabbage can be found here at Food.com

Finally we harvested out first ripe tomato last week. Our garden is 98% heritage varieties, but I must confess, this is an Early Girl hybrid. Still, clearly the cozy coats that protected them from many freezing nights did the job!

To bad it's not a picture of the tomato on the vine, but this was our first ripe tomato of the season. The green ones were knocked of by our chickens. Darn birds!

I can't believe you have your first ripe tomato! Who knows when that will happen around here...probably all at once!

Kimchi is great! We have Korean friends who make it and bring it to us! They even have special Kimchi refrigerators!
