Harvest Monday

Cherry toms ready to be roasted!

Quadro  Giallo D’ Asti Yellow Bell heirlooms from Robin & delicious red Marconi.
Black Beauty, Early Black Egg and Rosa Bianca

The blight is coming fast, so we're picking toms as soon as they begin to show
One of the smaller, but prettier of our moon and stars watermelons.
Can you see the small Sweet Purple bell pepper in the background?
Okra!
Be sure to stop by Daphe's Dandelions to see what other great harvests gardeners are enjoying around the world. Our biggest haul was watermelon and corn. Two out of three Moon and Stars were more than 20 pounds. One of them was 25! We harvested both rows of corn. They were about 20 feet long each for almost 40 pounds. The beans are doing well too, coming in at almost 20 lbs. We're very pleased with our harvests this August. And we're hoping the weather holds on because we still have tons of food (hmhm tomatoes) in the garden waiting to ripen!

This Harvest Monday we're showing totals for two weeks.

Cantaloupe 14 lb 1 oz
Carrot 8 lb 2 oz
Cucumber 1 lb 6 oz
Egg plant 6 lb
Green Beans 19 lb 10 oz
Okra 2lb 11 oz

Sweet Potato 1 lb 12 oz (They're almost ready!)
Tomatillo 3 lb 3 oz
Tomato 49 lb 12 oz
Watermelon 56 lb 12 oz
White Corn  38lb 14 oz

Bi-Weekly Total 223 lb 1 oz

  2. What a beautiful watermelon. I don't grow them since I don't like the texture, but I had a watermelon sangria that was to die for. I wish I had the recipe, but since I don't grow watermelons I wouldn't be able to make it anyway.

    1. You might like to try freezing watermelon for smoothies. I bet that would solve your texture problem. I'm not sure how good a smoothie would taste. We're going to give it a try this year.

  4. oh it all looks really wonderful! Melons have not done so well for me this year. The Blacktail Mountain is getting too much shade and is very very tiny. Ah well, always next year, eh?

    1. There is always next year. We're lucky for the sun. Our entire backyard is south east facing. One hillside is perfect for melons!

  7. Great harvest!! I am sure it's a real challenge to keep up with the preserving right now. I can't believe how big your Moon & Stars watermelons got. I guess you have the right soil and conditions for them.

BTW, The lighter eggplant is Rosa Bianca.

    1. Thanks Robin. I'm trying to keep track of the varieties I'm growing. It's going alright, but not my thing! I just want to grow it and eat it.

  9. What a gorgeous watermelon! I don't think our "vines" got much longer than a few inches! Everything so is bright and colorful! Congrats on the wonderful harvests!

    1. Thanks Bee Girl. I hope you'll try again next year. We use plenty of bone and blood meal, especially during the blossom time. Maybe that helps. We also hand pollinate. Cheaters!

  10. What a fantastic watermelon. I'm jealous we can only grow ice box sized melons in our area because the growing season is just to short. 213 pounds! Wow your two week total matches my year total. I've got a lot of work to do to keep up with you guys!!

    1. Belle told me today that the harvest totals were for closer to three weeks. So I fixed that detail. Still, thanks for the compliment. I hope you reach your 800 lb goal. We're hoping to exceed 1,000 lbs.

  11. You guys need to come down here next spring and give us a gardening tutorial! I can kill a cactus, but still want to start with a small veggie garden next spring. I would love to grow our own produce! How fun and rewarding! ~ Marianne (signed in as the Fick Brothers)

    1. Thanks Marianne. It's not to hard. I recommend not complicating things. Buy some seeds, turn some soil, mix in a little compost and see what grows! We take it one small step at a time around here. Life's to busy for the Gardening Olympics.

    1. Yea, thanks. We're hoping to average 50-75 pounds a week for the month of September. The melons should, fingers crossed, play a big part. We're keeping our fingers crossed.
