This week I mixed another yard of soil for more seeds and planter boxes. The boys like to play in the dirt almost as much as I do! My recipe is 4 parts peat moss, 1 -2 parts compost and 1 -2 parts vermiculite. I'm no expert on mixing dirt, but this works. All told, I've made several 5 gallon buckets, and we're using every bit.
We planted basil, Thai basil and cilantro in planters that we'll keep on the deck near the kitchen for easy access. Our spinach was not doing well under the lights. It couldn't wait for better weather, so we planted some of it in a planter box, (we'll put the rest outside tomorrow). How deep do their roots go? I have no idea if spinach can grow in a box. I probably should have read up on it first, but we'll know soon enough.
Gardening is one of the best things that you can do with your children! They will also like to see their pictures on your blog! I found it amazing how much my "Little Garden Helper" knew how to do in the garden last year at the age of two!
ReplyDeleteVillager grows beautiful spinach in containers. I don't have the best luck with spinach.
Things are looking good! I wish you luck with your new blog!

Hi Cloud, thanks for posting and following. I saw your leeks and am hopeful for mine.
ReplyDeleteYour spinach will probably grow fine in a box. I hope you soil mix works our for you; we found that too much peat moss raises the pH too much and made growing root crops impossible. We had to sulpher our boxes numerous times to lower the pH.
ReplyDeleteHi foodgardenkitchen, thanks for posting. Your thought about soil is very interesting. We have several onion growing from seed, but they are doing terrible! Maybe we have the same problem you had.
