Fall Garden Planting

Today we went between kid time, garden time and kids-in-the-garden time. I and the boys planted cabbage and cauliflower, lots of it! We were able to plant a little more than 50 plants today.

I'm not sure what's what because we mixed the seed trays up in the basement. I honestly don't know how many are cauliflower and how many are cabbage.  We just planted everything.

They didn't all fit in our new garden bed (see the pics below), so we put some plants in the "spring garden" just outside our back door (not pictured) and we put the rest in our main garden in the place of several dead tomato plants (not pictured).

Unfortunately, Labor Day is almost over and summer too. Tonight is a cold night, the coldest we've felt here. Hopefully the shock of moving the plants from indoors to outdoors won't be too much for them. I don't think so. We're hoping for a great fall garden harvest.

Eager gardeners at work.

Spreading straw for the coming cold.

Somersaults for C. James and straw seeds for the birds.

Q. James helped me plant an entire row. He was amazingly careful and patient with the job.

The finished bed. You have to look closely to see the cauliflower on the left and cabbage on the right.

  3. I like the way the plants look, big and healthy. Maybe that's something I need to think about ..a grow light place for new plants..

  5. Robin, it was lots of fun. If only the rain would slow down and the sun would shine a little. Are you getting a drenched as we are?

Jane, if anybody loves gardening that much, it's you!

Ginny, thanks. They could use a little sunshine now.

Apple Pie Gal, I'm really hoping so too. We're definitely going for it.

  6. You reminded me to get to work on our fall garden; unfortunately I didn't start any seedlings so it will just have to be direct seeded stuff... not anything like your lovely cabbages! Hopefully they produce well for you!

  8. Hi Prarie Cat, there's plenty of time for direct seeding. I hope you get lots of great vegetables.

Robin, stop raining already! The creek near our house is bulging. Our garden is soaked. We have potatoes in the ground that are probably rotten now. I hope your fall plants hang in there!

  12. Leigh, They are fantastic. Thank you. The bed of Cauliflower and Cabbage is growing well. We're holding out for a late freeze now.

Thomas, the kids were having fun that day. I think they only destroyed two or three plants. Not bad for a hard days work. All the signs are pointing to an early winter here too.

HangKebon, it was a good day. We hope to get back to it tomorrow with the boys. We're planting broccoli.
