Harvest Monday 1/2/12

Our first harvest of the year was a surprise! The leaves were frozen and rotting on top, but the white radish roots were healthy. We got 15 ounces and used them to make a tasty garlic radish dip.

Granny may not remember this, but last year late-season I asked her to give me some advice about what to plant in an open space after the summer harvest. These radishes were one of her recommendations. She also recommended carrots, which are doing fabulously in the garden too! Thanks Granny, who knew they would turn out to be our first harvest in the new year.

Stop by Daphne's Dandelions where she host gardeners  who are sharing their harvests from around the world.

  7. I love how the root crops hold so well in the winter garden soil. The tops of my parsnips have all died back but under the ground is a bounty of large long roots - a treat in the winter to dig up and enjoy! Congratulations on the nice "surprise" harvest of radishes.

  10. How neat! You should share your recipe... I can never find anything to do with radishes except throw them into salads.

  14. I wish I still had radishes. And I totally forgot to plant turnips. Maybe next year I'll remember things. Nah it will never happen.

  15. Robin, here's to the New (gardening) Year!

Dave, I look forward to 2012 and online gardening with you.

Thomas, the radishes were delicious. I'm still trying to decide whether to harvest the carrots now or wait until the first thaw.

Ginny, I'm glad to hear you're gonna try again. I bet you'll be more successful this time around.

Vanessa, Norma, Bee Girl, Mrs. Pickles, My Urban Garden, MKgirl thanks so much! We can hardly believe the year we had. We look forward to the new one with you.

KitsapFG, this is our first year of really enjoying root crops this time of year. We look forward to trying out more and more kinds.

Marcia,You'll have to go to KitsapFG blog to see the parsnips this week.

Prairie Cat,Liz, the recipe is very simple. For every 6 oz of turnips add 4 garlic cloves. Chop and mix with 16 oz of softened cream cheese. It's slightly spicy and very tasty!

Daphne, this time of year garden planning is so easy. Everything makes perfect sense, but when summer comes, all bets are off!
